About Joseph Pilates

The remarkable and proven system that we teach at True Pilates Perth was created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates born in 1883 in Germany.

In 1912 he moved to England to further his training as a boxer and to teach boxing and self-defense. In 1914 after WW1 broke he was interned in a camp in Lancaster. There, he taught wrestling, self-defense and began devising a system of original exercise that later became ‘Contrology’.

He was transferred to another camp, on the Isle of Man, and became a nurse helping with wartime diseases and the injured. It was in these hospitals that he developed equipment to rehabilitate patients. Joseph formulated exercises for patients who were bed bound; using bed springs to accompany these exercises. In 1926 he moved to New York. He opened his first studio in a part of town close to several dance studios. It was in this studio he continued developing and refining his method and apparatus right up until his death in 1967.
